If you are using an ubuntu-based distro on a macbook pro retina, I recommend grabbing this package here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/raring/bcmwl-kernel-source, as the latest version of the bcmwl package supports the BCM4331 card of the macbook pro retina, and it has support for more modes than the b43 drivers do.

    I wanted to comment on your initial install about this - the latest daily (as of a few days ago) has wireless support via the Software Sources -> Additional Drivers feature. I believe it's doing the same thing as this package. I've been using it for a few days and it's more stable than the b43 drivers

    I was running Linux Mint 14, so I couldn't really upgrade to raring, so I changed the restricted package section to raring (and only that one, otherwise my system became unstable) so I can install updates for nvidia and bcmwl and such without things breaking. The b43 driver isn't supported by the network I'm on right now, which was terribly annoying, and even when it was supported, it was rather slow and seemed to be dropping packets all over the place.

    Now that Olivia's packages are released (in beta of course), I was able to upgrade to olivia/raring, and it worked almost flawlessly. I haven't really had an issue except that suspend stopped working, but I'm used to not relying on suspend in Linux.

    You mention trying a thunderbolt ethernet adapter, I was wondering if you'd tried the firewire800 adapter?
